..... VANUATU GEOLOGY, WATER AND WATERFALLS ON TANNA ISLAND.

Tanna (& Vanuatu's) Geology.

The string of islands that forms Vanuatu follow a series of fault lines or planes of weakness in the ocean floor. The Vanuatu islands were born initially from volcanos which developed along these faults, and provided a foundation for extensive coral reefs to propagate.

While some islands of Vanuatu, such as Efate Island show almost not signs of its volcanic history (having coral at depth almost everywhere), Tanna Island has the ever active Mt Yasur Volcano and consequently has extensive areas of volcanic rock, volcanic ash, and pumice (on its beaches). The benefit of course, is that its highland regions have incredible fertility due to its volcanic soils.

.... The Tanna Island Landscape.

Due to seismic upheaval in association with continuing coral growth over eons of time has lead to most islands been completely covered to considerable depth in coral or limestone formations. The subsequent erosion and weathering provided zones of particularly rugged topography, and it is estimated that over half of vanuatu's landmass has an average gradient greater than 20%, and over a third has an elevation higher than 300 metres above sea level.

Tanna Island Water & Waterfalls.

Being located at a latitude that provides significant rainfall, the development of underwater reservoirs and water catchments meant that numerous springs developed and abound today (perhaps the largest being on the east coast of Santo), and give rise to creeks and rivers that never dry up throughout the year.

Combining this with the jagged and abrupt terrain has lead to a significant number of pools, cascades and waterfalls - some of which appear to appear out of seemingly impossible situations.

Inspring Walk 4 - First (Lenuanatuaiu) Waterfall.

Experience the Central Highlands of Tanna Island (middlebush), and discover one of the foremost and hugely popular waterfalls, Lenuanatuaiu waterfall ........ The was one the first major attractions in the highlands region to be found by travellers staying down on the west coast and remains a popular attraction. The waterfall is located just down from the escarpment where Rachel and Esso's accommodation is located, and part of the attraction itself is the view that is present from the Restaurant (a view that you wake up to if you stay at Tanna Adventures), which provides views of Mt Yasur Volcano in the background. The creek that feeds the waterfall feeds its way on its way through a deep valley that has vegetation dating back to the beginning of time. Walls of small orchards, ferns and deep forest flora abound everywhere. The creek eventually ends up at Lenuingao beach. When plentiful, Rachel goes down to the creek and collects freshwater prawns from the various shallow pools, for dinner. Simply delicious - but only available occasionally. Travel Tour Overview from Esso's Accommodation : • From the restaurant it takes about half an hour to walk down a series of pathways and steps down to the waterfall, and is fairly steep in parts. Coming back obviously takes longer, and in all takes about 45 minutes. Take your swimming trunks for a swim. Added Overview Travelling from the Whitegrass Coast : • If the tour is taken from any of the accommodation along the whitegrass coast, then approximately 1 hour can be added to the tour time (half an hour each way).
